As tradition dictates the season opened with the Co Monaghan MC Drumlin. Victory once again went to Andy Mackarel / Liam Higgins (Ascona) on 58 minutes just 8 minutes ahead of Fintan McGorman / Sandy Mills. The Nova crew were left to rue not skipping TP 4 3 when lateness and a wrong approach cost them 29 minutes!! Third spot went to Pakie Duffy / Harry Bleakley (Golf GTi) on 69 minutes.

Ian Greer and Dean Beckett were the surprise but well deserved winners of the final round of the Toshiba Equium Tarmac Championship. They totally dominated the event from the word go in their Treadwell sponsored Celica and after the demise of Andrew Nesbitt and Eamonn Boland on Sunday morning, they were able to keep it steady to the finish. Bertie Fisher and Rory Kennedy in the ToughMAC/Subaru Ireland Impreza had an uneventful weekend to finish second, with the local crew of Liam O'Callaghan and Hugh McPhilips a brilliant third in the Dunlop Shod F2 Escort Maxi.

Round 5 1998 Toshiba Equium Tarmac Championship

Uel Williamson with Gleen Wilson on the notes brought his Opel engined Mark I Escort to first overall on a hard fought MANX Trophy Rally. The Swedish ladies crew of Pernilla Walfridsson/Ulrika Mattsson in a Group N Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IV finished a close second, and local hero and last years winner Shaun Fox third in a Nova.

Round 1 RIAC Forestry Championship

Two dominant times on the long Killavullen stage were enough to help Kenny McKinstry to a 48 second victory in his Tom Geraghty Tyres backed Subaru Impreza. Dermot Kelly who was fastest on seven of the events ten stages was unable to match McKinstry's pace on the ten mile stage where he lost 56 seconds due to an overheating engine and could not repeat last years win on the Duhallow Park Hotel based event in Kanturk.

After one of the most exciting and drama filled rally of the Lakes, James Lecky with George Miller joined the list of Irish Tarmac Rally winners. It was Austin McHale who set the pace, but a 3 min penalty dropped the McHale to second. After an eventful first visit to Killarney, Andrew Nesbitt/James O’Brien came home third. Gp N went to Park Kirk, and F2 to Liam O’Callaghan.

Bertie Fisher has decided not to appeal the decision of rally officials to lift a penalty on Austin McHale which effectively gave McHale victory in the AA Circuit of Ireland on Monday.
