Round 5 - 2017 MSA British Historic Rally Championship

Second for Stanley/McAuley Puts Them Back on Track!

Posted: July 17, 2017 7:47 AM

For Killinchy’s Stanley Orr, and co-driver Stephen McAuley from Belfast, a second place finish on the ALMC Stages- MSA British Historic Rally Championship round was almost like a victory for the team with their MK Transport backed MK1 Escort. “We have had a run of ill fortune I guess since the middle of last season, with mechanical gremlins, and even a small off this year, which set us back. With the new BDA 16 valve engine and ZF 5 speed gearbox in the car, it’s an exciting time and we have a lot to learn. We went to the ALMC Stages with the aim to finish and to get some miles. To end up a minute behind the Historic winner Rob Smith in his MK2, I am happy with that after over eighty stage miles, as we have a lot more to learn” said Stanley.

The ALMC event took place on Sunday over nine closed road special stages, all based around the Rally Headquarters in Trim, County Meath, and Stanley and co-driver Stephen McAuley elected to make their own pace-notes for the event. “The notes worked out well, although I was a bit conservative on the grading for a few corners. The car was working superbly, and we used our second hand Hoosier tyres on the event, but handling and braking were superb all day. In fact I felt I was braking too early for the capabilities of the car and the tyres, and also not revving the BDA out to 8800-9000 rpm which I need to do to optimise the power. I’d a slight problem selecting second coming down the gear-box. This was partly due to me not being used to the ZF, and also due to a loose gear-knob for a few stages. Overall the wee car is flying, but it proved at the weekend that we need the miles, as it’s a different driving style now with this set up. We backed off a bit for the last loop, but nearly too much, as Rudi Lancaster nearly caught us, but I so much wanted to get the car home in one piece after all the recent dramas.”

It was a great result for the County Down team, with the ever eager service crew of Finlay Kirkpatrick, Dominic McGreevy and Trevor Thompson tending the MK1 Escort in Trim. “Now we are looking to maximise our seat time, so we are considering an entry for the Tyrone Stages on 29th July, and possibly the Ulster International in August, with the main focus being an attack on the Manx Rally in September, were once again we would join the MSA British Historic foray.” Rallying is an expensive business, and Stanley is grateful to his sponsors- MK Transport, Hoosier Tyres, Fuchs Oils, Carryduff Autoparts, LWH Supplies and Stephen Cairns Plumbing for their support. ”Their assistance has been vital, and hopefully now this will help to turn around our rallying fortunes, with exciting times ahead.”

Smith/Cook top Mintex MSA BHRC in Ireland

Posted: July 17, 2017 7:45 AM

Rob Smith and Alun Cook took top honours in round five of the 2017 Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship, the Trim-based ALMC Stages in Ireland (Sunday 2 July).

The championship’s first visit to the Republic of Ireland for at least 15 years marked the start a run of four asphalt rallies as the schedule heads into the second half of the season. Smith, now an established asphalt ace, joined the regular contenders for the first time this season in his immaculate RSR-prepared Ford Escort Mk2 and the Towcester-based driver came away with maximum points.

However, for leading season-long championship contenders Nick Elliott/Dave Price and Jason Pritchard/Phil Clarke it was an unfruitful trip across the water. Neither crew finished the rally and there was particular disappointment for Pritchard when distributor failure put him out when leading. The result means no change at the top of the championship leader board, with Elliott retaining a 20-point margin. Pritchard had hoped to pull back some points on the asphalt event, but will now try and do that on round six, the Harry Flatters Rally on Epynt (Sunday 30 July).

“It was a great event with some amazing stages,” said Pritchard. “The Viking Motorsport car was a pleasure to drive and we were setting top times against the modern cars.”

Leading the chase of Smith in the final result was Northern Irish crew Stanley Orr/Stephen McAuley (Ford Escort Mk1), after beating Rudi Lancaster/Guy Weaver (Escort Mk2) by less than four seconds. Orr was only a minute down on Smith after more than an hour of rallying and had to keep pushing hard to fend off the charging Lancaster. Tim Freeman and Paul Williams were not far adrift in fourth place in their Ford Escort Mk2, while Phil Jobson and Arwel Jenkins were classified fifth despite a lengthy delay.

Irish challenge next for Mintex MSA BHRC

Posted: June 27, 2017 9:20 AM

The Co Meath-based ALMC Stages (Sunday 2 July) is round five of the 2017 Mintex MSA British Historic Rally Championship as the focus moves to the closed-road asphalt event in the Republic of Ireland.

The championship’s first visit to the Republic of Ireland for at least 15 years marks the start a run of four asphalt rallies as the schedule heads into the second half of the season. The event covers around 80 stage miles in three loops of stages.

The Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club promotes the MSA BHRC under a five-year contract and 2017 will be the third year of that agreement. The calendar covers five gravel and three asphalt rallies, with a double-header on the Isle of Man in September to make nine rounds. The team at Special Stage will film all eight events to give the BHRC some of the best TV exposure in British rallying.

Championship leaders Nick Elliott and Dave Price will be contesting their first closed-road, pace-note rally for 30 years and will go up against reigning champions Jason Pritchard and Phil Clarke on the compact event. However, established asphalt ace Rob Smith and co-driver Alun Cook could shake up the situation on Smith’s 2017 BHRC debut. Pritchard knows that he needs to bring Elliott’s four-event winning run to a close and his far greater knowledge of this type of event should serve the Welshman well.

More rapid crews in Category 3 include Rudi Lancaster/Guy Weaver and Tim Freeman/Paul Williams in their Ford Escort Mk2s. Both crews have the pace to finish on the overall historic podium if they have a clear run and Lancaster has been snapping at the heels of Elliott and Pritchard on recent gravel rallies.

Northern Irish crew Stanley Orr and Stephen McAuley rejoin the championship after missing a couple of rounds in their BDA-powered Ford Escort to head the Capital Construction Category 2, and will be aiming to match the leading Category 3 cars. Leading the chase of the relatively local crew will be Phil Jobson and Arwel Jenkins in their Escort Mk1.

The rally will be based in the town of Trim, Co Meath. The first car will start at 9.30am on Sunday and return to the finish at around 5.30pm.

The ALMC Stages Rally is organised by the ALMC Motor Club.

With entries now over the 40 mark, and final preparations being made for their Stages Rally on 2nd July, ALMC Motor Club are looking forward to welcoming Competitors and visitors from all over Ireland and the UK to the beautiful town of Trim in County Meath for what promises to be a fantastic weekend of Motorsport. Club members are busy making final arrangements for what they expect to be a great weekend on the Special Stages all based in the area around Trim.

Based at the now regular Rally HQ at the Castle Arch Hotel in Trim, and with three superb and challenging Special Stages prepared for the action, the hard working members of ALMC Motor Club now look forward to more entries arriving in the next two weeks that will make the Rally one not to be missed.

As in previous years, the spacious facilities of the Oaktree Business Park have been made available to the Motor Club for Sunday Service area, and the Business park will also host pre-event Scrutiny on the evening before the Rally. The Motor Club are very grateful to the owners of the Business Park for their generous permission to allow its use for the Rally weekend.

As always, the ALMC Stages Rally appeals to competitors of every level, from the locally based and national level Clubman, in Ford Escorts and Honda Civics, to Mitsubishi Evolutions, Ford Fiesta R2’s and Skoda Fabia’s, to Subaru Impreza World Rally Cars. For the first time, this year’s ALMC Stages Rally is a round of the Mintex British Historic Rally Championship, and several entries have already been received for the Rally from competitors in the UK.

Some pristine, historic and rarely seen Rally machinery will be competing on the 2nd July Rally and as always in the Historic classes, the level of competition will be extremely high.
Included in this year’s entry will be some classic Ford Escort RS1600 and RS1800 models, in absolutely pristine condition, some of which will be making rare appearance on Irish Tarmac Stages.

Already included in the list of entries received are Steve Wood (Subaru S10 WRC), Ian Barrett (Darrian T90 GTR), Liam Bowhan (Toyota Starlet) and among many local drivers taking part, Tom Holton (Honda Civic), Gary McNamee (Honda Civic) and Stephen Cummins (Honda Civic).
