A beautiful spring day greeted the autocross fraternity as they togged out for last Sunday's Skibbereen autocross. The Skibereen Motor club hosted the first loose autocross of the year on a smooth and technical course at Gravel Park, Glancore near Clonakilty. Twenty four drivers entered the race and four timed runs were held. Austin Shinnors reports from round one of the Munster Autocross Championship.

First out of the blocks was local driver Paul O' Driscoll (Semog Buggy) ahead of Clareman Brian Hassett (Semog Buggy) with Dermot O' Riordan (Semog Buggy) in third place. On the second timed run O' Driscoll retained his lead with Hassett dropping to third behind a charging Fachtna Mc Carthy (Semog Buggy). On the third run Hassett pulled out all the stops to record fastest time of the day with a time of 118.49 and his first autocross win. On the fourth and final run O' Driscoll put in a huge effort to secure a time of 119.70. This was enough to clinch second place but he was 1.31 seconds shy of the flying Clareman. Mc Carthy was third, his best time of 121.21 scored on his second timed run. In eight place was Johhny Kenneally (Impreza) who was fastest saloon while Orla Beamish (Nova) won the ladies award.
