The opening round of the Valvoline National Forest Championship kicked off with the Sean Conlon Memorial Forest Rally hosted by Tipperary Light Car & Motorcycle Club in its new base in Clonmel. A total 56 crews started this event between 4wd and 2wd machinery.

The morning started with the sun blazing and competitors eager to get started! After 2 stages top 4wd crew to come out on top were Desi Henry & Liam Moynihan in their Evo with Pat O’Connell trailing by just 0.4 of a second. Sam Moffett lay a further 7 seconds back off Desi Henry. Top 2WD crew after stage 2 were Irish National 2wd forestry champions 2013 Shane McGirr and Martin McGarrity with Mickey Conlon in 2nd. Pat O’Connell was forced to retire after 2 stages with gearbox trouble.

The final loop saw Desi Henry maintain the overall lead in the 4wd category over Brendan Cumiskey in his Evo. Top 2wd crew were Shane McGirr with James Coleman second. The National Forestry Championship moves on to Carrick On-Sur next for the Willie Longman Forestry Rally in March. Tipperary Light Car & Motorcycle club would like to thank their sponsors and Valvoline for supporting the event.

Report: 2014 Triton Showers South East Stages Rally Championship

Posted: February 3, 2014 7:10 PM

The opening round of the 2014 TRITON SHOWERS South East Stages Rally Championship, the Tipperary Motor Club's Sean Conlon Memorial Forestry Rally was indeed blessed with the only rain-free week window in a week of continuous rain, which had most of the country waterlogged. The Sunny South East came close to living up to its name.

This is a class based championship where the winner in each class has the potential to win the 2014 TRITON SHOWERS South East Stages Rally Championship outright.

Leading the championship is the crew to beat in the two wheel drive class, Shane McGirr / Martin McGarritty in the Toyota Starlet, CLASS 5, who by declaring the event as their bonus round have a healthy lead on 30 points.

Second overall is shared by Andrew Fanning / Derek Gibbs, Ford Ka, class 1 and Noel Wade / Eamon Touhy, Ford Escort MK2, class 3, with 24 points. Both of these crews have taken advantage of the bonus round of scoring double points.

Third overall are Micky Conlon and Ciaran McPhillips, class 5, Ford Escort MK2, 20 points.

    Class 1. 1 Pierce Doheny / T. Hayes. Peugeot 106. 10 pts.
    Class 2. 1 Mike Garahy / C. Garahy. Escort MK2. 15 pts.
    Class 3. 1 Douglas Stewart / B. Ryan. Peugeot 206. 15 pts.
    Class 4. 1 Alan Commins / J. Commins. Escort MK2. 15 pts.
    Class 5. 1 James Coleman / L. Brennan. Escort MK2. 12 pts.
    Class 6. 1 Ian Chadwick / J. Bould. Subaru Impreza. 15 pts.
    Juniors. 1 Conor McCarthy / D. O’Donovan. Honda Civic. 12 pts.
These positions will undoubtedly change as the championship progresses and crews start scoring their bonus points.

The next round of the 2014 TRITON SHOWERS South East Stages Rally Championship is the Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club’s Willie Loughman Memorial Forestry Rally. The event is based in the Viking Ramada Hotel, Waterford. Three stages done twice are on offer.

As PRO for the TRITON SHOWERS South East Stages Rally Championship I would like on behalf of the promoting clubs and competitors to say farewell from the stages to Mick Nevin and his 99% reliable Ford Escort MK2. Mick has not hung up his helmet but will be competing in autocross and quarry events. Keep doing the LOTTO Mike, somebody has to win it and it could be you. Thanks for the memories.

Posted: January 22, 2014 8:45 AM

Tipperary Light Car & Motor Car Club are delighted to announce that final preparations are almost complete for this year’s Sean Conlon Memorial Forestry Rally which will be based in Clonmel on stages which have not been used in over 25 years. This year’s Clerk of the course Noel Reynolds has been working hard with his team to ensure this year’s event is competitor friendly with scrutiny available in the morning for competitors in Dudley Mills before the first leaves parc ferme at 11:30am. Both Patterson’s and WRC regular co-driver Killian Duffy have completed their pacenote recce’s and have both been impressed with the new stages put together. Killian Duffy in particular commented saying
“..SS1 is tricky, SS2 is 16km of the best gravel stage u will find anywhere in IRL!..”

Since the entries opened on the 9th January, the event has received a huge amount of interest from all over Ireland as well as crews from the UK. This year’s will see forestry regulars Mick O’Brien, Dan O’Brien, Sam Moffett, Josh Moffett and local man Pat O’Connell in their four wheel drive machinery. Again top two wheel drive crews Shane McGirr and Mickey Conlon have also committed to the event. Entries for the event are not due to close for some days and plenty more crews are expected to be in parce ferme on the 2nd February.
