Top part West Coast Rally Championship preview

Posted: November 9, 2010 12:09 PM

Kerry Motor Club host the final round of the 2010 Top part West Coast Rally Championship the Banna Beach Resort Kerry Mini Stages Rally on Sunday 14th November, where the battle for the overall honour of been crowned 2010 champions will take place. There are 4 drivers still in contention to win the title and have their name engraved on the Mickey Farrell Memorial Trophy; they are 2009 champion Niall Maguire, Shane Maguire, Neil Pierce and Richard Burke.

Monaghan’s Niall Maguire will be aiming to take a record third championship title having previously won in 1999 in a Gp A Subaru 555 and in 2009 in his current Subaru S11 world rally car. He currently leads the overall driver standings on 83 points having scored 3 maximums in Birr, Limerick and Clare and took second placed points in Kerry having just been narrowly edged out of another maximum points haul by his good friend Kevin Barrett. With Niall not starting on round 4 the Galway Summer Rally it was the new kid on the block Niall’s 21 year old son Shane who in his first season in a 4 wheel drive car took maximum points in his Group N Subaru N11. Shane went to the penultimate round in Clare in 2nd position in the overall standings and put in a stunning performance to take 3rd placed championship points to move to within 1 single point of his father Niall. When dropped scores come in to play Shane will need to score a minimum of 8 points to be in contention for this year’s title, but what is more interesting is if Shane were to win the championship he would be the 1st driver to take the title off his father who is the current champion, making it a piece of rallying history.

Galway’s Neil Pierce is in 3rd place on a total 73 points and is the only 2 wheel drive driver in the top 5. Pierce took the overall lead of the championship after round 4 but with the powerful 4 wheel drive cars having an advantage in the slippy conditions he dropped to 3rd place. Neil will need to score 2nd placed championship points in Banna and hope that Shane Maguire scores 7 points or less to secure the overall title. The final driver in contention is another Galway man Richard Burke. The Subaru Impreza driver has a good championship season to date and currently lies in 4th position. If Richard Burke is to win this years championship he needs to score maximum points on the final round and hope that his nearest rivals Shane Maguire and Neil Pierce don’t score the point’s they require.

In the overall co driver standings Monaghan’s Enda Sherry has a 5 point advantage over Galway’s Enda O’Leary. When dropped scores are taken into account Sherry’s advantage strengthens to 15 point’s but the Monaghan co driver will still need to score some points to be sure of his 3rd overall championship co driver’s title which would put him level with Limerick’s Anthony Nestor who won the co driver’s title in 1994/95 co driving for Mickey Farrell and 1999 with Niall Maguire. Limerick’s Sean Mullally and Clare’s Grainne McEnery are tied for 3rd place 21 points behind Enda Sherry. There are 4 other co drivers who still have a chance of a top 3 overall championship place, Dennis O’Connell (57), Johnny Burke (53), Jonathan Keane (51) and David Gardiner (43).

Also up for grabs in Kerry are the 2 wheel drive, Group N, Historic and Junior titles. The 2 wheel drive award is currently been lead by Neil Pierce, but if Pierce stays in the top 3 in the overall standings he will not be illegible for the 2 wheel drive award which will leave Kerry’s Mike Quinn and Limerick’s Ed Synan in contention for the award. Quinn who is the 2009 Dunlop National Rally.ie 2 wheel drive champion and Synan who is a former double Top Part West Coast Champion having won the title in 1997 and 2008 are only separated by 4 points with Quinn holding the advantage.

Shane Maguire leads Group N but as he is likely to finish in the top 3 overall standings the title looks to be in the grasp of Galway’s Liam Higgins in his Mitsubishi Evo 7.

Tralee’s Gerard McCarty and co driver Tommy Commane Jnr currently lead the inaugural Historic championship in their Triumph TR7. They lead the Ford Escort of Galway’s Martin and Shane Crevan by 21 points and will only need to start the rally to take the overall historic honours.

Cork’s Cal McCarty and co driver Eamon Dullea lead the overall Junior standings from Limerick’s Kevin O’Connor and co driver Donal Balfe. Both crews have already dropped scores with McCarty holding a 19 point advantage over O’Connor heading into the final round. In 3rd position are the Clare/Kerry pairing of martin Casey and co driver Katie Quinn who are still in contention to take 2nd place in the Junior championship.
