EVANS WINS NENAGH RALLY TO TAKE EARLY LEAD IN DUNLOP CHAMPIONSHIP   A new season of the Dunlop National Rally Championship got underway with the Abbey Court Hotel Nenagh Rally that was won by Welsh ace, Mel Evans (Subaru WRC) and his co-driver, Patrick Walsh.  At the finish of the six-stage rally, Evans/Walsh were 22 seconds ahead of the Subaru pair of Derek McGarrity/Willie McKee.  Kevin Kelleher/Adrian Deasy (Mitsubishi) were some 21 seconds further behind in third.  The Modified category was won by Mike Quinn/Grainne McEnery (Escort) and Stephen Cullen/Seamus O'Grady (Subaru) won Group N.

On the opening 20km stage, where the competitors found the roads frosty and slippery, Evans set the pace and finished the stage some eight seconds ahead of the Subaru of Derek McGarrity, who was driving the ex-Eamonn Boland Subaru S12B. The reigning Northern Ireland Rally champion was on his first real outing in this car in terms of driving it on narrow stages.  Meanwhile, Donegal's, Manus Kelly, in his Mk. 2 Escort, set a terrific pace and occupied third spot - just two seconds further behind.  Niall Maguire and Kevin Barrett, both in Subaru WRC's, shared equal fourth place with sixth placed, Kevin Kelleher, the reigning Paterson's RallyNews Group N champion, leading Group N in his Mitsubishi Evo9.
The top ten was completed by Trevor Mulligan (Escort), Aidan Bourke (Mitsubishi), Mike Quinn (Escort), the reigning rally.ie champion and Tom Flaherty (Escort).  Daniel McKenna (Escort) lost considerable time with transmission woes and ended the stage down in 92nd. place. Barrett punched in the best time for the second stage that was enough to promote him to second spot - ten seconds behind rally leader, Mel Evans (Subaru).  Tyre choice was proving the decisive factor with Evans reckoning that he could have done with more grip.  Maguire was only three seconds behind Barett as Kevin Kelleher (Mitsubishi) slotted into fourth some three seconds ahead of Derek McGarrity, who spun and lost valuable seconds.

Local ace, Aidan Bourke reckoned his Mitsubishi lacked grip in the conditions - due to his selection of a hard compound tyre. Manus Kelly (Escort) moved into the lead of the Modified category when Mike Quinn lost time with a broken suspension link.  Their fellow rival, Trevor Mulligan crashed out.  The final places in the top ten were occupied by Tom Flaherty (Escort) and Alan O'Callaghan (Subaru). Patrick McKenna, who finished the stage in third gear, made up twelve places to occupy 80th. in general classification. On the repeat of the two stages, Evans punched in a pair of fastest times and opened up an impressive 33-second lead.  Barrett maintained second although he had a slight overshoot on the fourth test.
Maguire was six seconds behind but only a second ahead of a charging Kevin Kelleher, in his Group N Mitsubishi.  The reigning Patterson's RallyNews champion, lost a few seconds when he spun at a left hand junction.  McGarrity, who admitted he was still learning the characteristics of his Subaru, was three seconds behind Kelleher. Quinn regained the lead in the Modified section - aided when Manus Kelly lost time with a puncture on S.S. 4.  Ed Synan (Escort) in eighth place experienced some electrical woes.  The Subaru pair of Alan O'Callaghan and Pat Kelly rounded off the top ten.  Meanwhile, Daniel McKenna (Escort) moved up 39 places to 41st.  Barrett retired just after leaving the final service halt when a wheel nut sheared off one of the front wheels of his Subaru.  Out on the stage, McGarrity set a blistering pace to move into second - 37 seconds behind Evans and two ahead of Maguire.  Kelleher and Quinn retained the lead of their respective Group N and Modified categories.

Evans did enough on the final stage to secure victory and maximum Dunlop points.  McGarrity took second, he was fastest on the stage while Kelleher clinched third after Maguire's Subaru developed turbo problems.

Quinn got the defence of his rally.ie Modified crown off to the perfect start, he was also fifth overall - ten seconds ahead of rival, Manus Kelly.  Alan O'Callaghan (Subaru) was seventh overall while Washington James, who struggled during the morning stages, finished eighth overall.  Pat Kelly (Subaru) and Jason Roche (Escort) rounded off the top ten.

Meanwhile, Daniel McKenna (Escort) battled his way back from 91st on the opening stage after to finish 22nd. overall, he was the recipient of the inaugural "Driver of the Day" award.

Young Limerick Crew take victory in Junior Rally

Posted: March 2, 2010 3:01 PM

Askeaton's Kevin O'Connor and Donal Balfe drove to an impressive victory in the Nenagh Stages Junior Rally on Sunday.
This was Kevin's first time competing in his new C2R2 and it didnt take him to long to adapt to FWD and left hand drive! his last stage time would have been good enough for 9th O/A in the main field!
This allowed him to take victory from Darren McKenna who also put in some very respectable times during the event. But i'm sure most people will agree with a performance like this, that 19 year old, Kevin is showing great signs of pure natural talent.

He was delighted to have won this event, as he was only hoping for a good clean run and respectable finish.

This event was round 1 of the Dunlop National Junior Rally Championship.
This victory has given the limerick crew a dream start to the season.

DUNLOP CONTENDERS SET FOR NENAGH
Preview courtesy of Dunlop - Proud sponsors of the National Rally Championship

Posted: February 27, 2010 4:14 PM

A new season of the Dunlop National Rally Championship begins on Sunday February 28th . with the Abbey Court Hotel Nenagh Rally.  The quest for the Vard Memorial Trophy will take competitors through some 1000 kilometres of special stages over the ten round campaign that will be contested in all four provinces.

The opening round, organised by the Birr & District Motor Club, who have attracted a superb entry, has all three reigning champions defending their respective titles - Cavan's, Patrick Elliott, who won the overall award in the Dunlop series; Kevin Kelleher, the Patterson's RallyNews Group N champion and Mike Quinn, who won the inaugural rally.ie award for two wheel drive competitors, begin the defence of their titles in Nenagh.

Elliott and co-driver, Paul Goodman are the top seeds in their Subaru WRC with opposition emanating from their 2009 Dunlop rivals, Monaghan's, Niall Maguire and Maynooth's, Kevin Barrett, both in Subaru WRC's, while fellow Subaru WRC pair, Glengormley's, Derek McGarrity and Welsh ace, Mel Evans are also planning to tackle the Dunlop series.

For Cavan driver, Elliott, the 2010 series presents a unique challenge as he tries to become the first ever driver in the history of the national championship to record a straight hat-trick of victories.  "It's not something I have been thinking about.  It has been a long lay off since last October and I have no idea what my pace will be like." said Elliott.  On the opposition, he added, "The more competition, the better.  This is a great start to the championship, it makes the prize worth winning."

Triple national champion, Niall Maguire is playing it event by event.  "Honestly, I have no plans, I have to see what happens with Enda (Sherry) in terms of his work commitments.  The season has crept in very quickly, I will wait and see what happens."

Meanwhile, Kevin Barrett, who won the 2009 Galway Summer Rally, is quite clear on his intentions, "My plan for 2010 is to win the championship."  The Maynooth ace was quite pleased with his performance in the recent Galway International and will be a force to be reckoned with in Nenagh.

The decision by former Irish Tarmac champion, Derek McGarrity (Subaru WRC) to contest the Dunlop series has added an extra dimension and it will be interesting to see how he adapts to the national campaign. Welsh ace, Mel Evans is a regular competitor at Irish events, on his last appearance on the Fastnet Rally last October, he was second overall.  With the top five relatively evenly matched, any error over six 20km stages will be severely punished.

The change in regulations allowing the Group N cars run the 33mm restrictor, should see the Mitsubishi trio of Kevin Kelleher, Garry Jennings and Thomas Fitzmaurice much closer to their World Rally Car rivals.  Patterson's RallyNews Group N award winner, Kelleher remarked, "With the 33mm restrictor, the car has been transformed.  It is much more responsive and the acceleration in the higher gears is much more pronounced."

Jennings managed only a few kilometres in the Galway International Rally and will be keen to make the best possible start to his Dunlop season.  Last season's early leader, Thomas Fitzmaurice will be equally intent on a strong opening performance.

The top Tipperary entry is that of Aidan Bourke (Mitsubishi), who will be aiming to match his showroom rivals.  Donegal's, Trevor Bustard (Mitsubishi) completes the top ten.

Rally.ie champion, Mike Quinn (Ford Escort) has some tough opposition in Nenagh, it includes Trevor Mulligan, who won the category in the corresponding event in 2009, Donegal's, Manus Kelly (Ford Escort), Welshman, Washington James (Darrian), Daniel McKenna (Escort), who made a great impression in the modified category in the Galway International, Ed Synan (Escort) and local stalwart, David Percy (Ford Escort) are all amongst a cracking Modified entry.   Elsewhere, John O'Donnell, Gordon Rogers, Eoin Woods, Gary Reidy and Frank Sweeney, all in Ford Escorts, illustrate the quality of the two-wheel drive category.

The rally is also the opening round of the Dunlop Junior Rally Championship.
Kevin O'Connor (Citroen C2R2); Darren McKenna Darren (Toyota Corolla); Damien Whoriskey (Ford Escort); Damien Boyle (Honda Civic); Cal McCarthy (Honda Civic); Patrick Slattery (Honda Civic); Michael McKennedy (Toyota Corolla) and James Whelan (Honda Civic) are some of the fifteen seeded entries.  Todd Falvey (Porsche 911) heads the Historic entry.

Ahead of the opening round, Dunlop supremo, Richard Warbrick commented,
"It a positive start to the season in the difficult times we are in, hopefully, it will maintain that level throughout the season.  In terms of the Dunlop Junior Championship, it is always good to encourage the Juniors along, they are the future of the sport.  One driver from that series and two from the main championship will go forward to the interview for the Billy Coleman Award."

Footage of the event - as seen through the cameras of "On the Limit Sports" - will he screened to a global audience via Motors TV, Sky Sports and Setanta Sports, dates and times to be advised.

Due to extremely bad road surfaces on Ss1 the club have been forced to cancel the first stage as it was felt the road was in an unsafe condition for competition cars to compete on and the club regret any inconvenience caused by this.

The Rally will now consist of Two 20km, fast flowing challenging stages done 3 times.
There will be three Service halts, one before the first stage and after stage2 and stage4, with service been held in the centralised mart in Nenagh town.

This is a more relaxed event format with an early recce start on Saturday morning with a very compact recce route and an early start time Sunday morning with the first car away at 9.30am and due back at 4.15pm at rally HQ Sunday evening.

Marshals also required anyone wishing to help out please contact 086-8179297 / +353 86-8179297
