Molly Taylor – British Ladies Rally Champion

Posted: September 4, 2009 8:47 AM

It is testament to the worldwide appeal of the MSA British Rally Championship that it continues to attract drivers from as far afield as Finland, Iceland and even Australia.

In the British Rally Championship’s 51st year, Molly Taylor, the 21 year old from Sydney can be proud of her achievement on the recent Toddsleap.com Ulster International Rally. On only her third tarmac event, in the UK’s premier rally championship she secured the prestigious title of MSA British Ladies Rally Champion.

Last year 2007 & 2008 Australian 1600 Rally Champion Taylor took the plunge and contested the final round of the BRC in a Suzuki Swift, one of the single make cars that contest the UK’s Swift Sport Cup.

This year she is in with a chance of winning the title. After taking victory on the opening two gravel events and with previous experience of Rally Yorkshire, she and co-driver Jemma Bellingham are hopeful of success. In a male dominated sport it is indeed testament to her determination that she has managed to reach this stage in just her first year of UK rallying.

Delving into the BRC records it appears that Molly has another accolade to add to the BRC Ladies title: that of being the only overseas driver ever to have won the trophy. However a correction is in order, as the previous Swift Sport Cup press release stated that Molly would take her trophy in London, when it will actually be presented alongside the main MSA British Rally Championship awards at the BRC “Bash” at the end of October.

The final round of both British Rally Championship and its Swift Sport Cup is International Rally Yorkshire which is based in Pickering, North Yorkshire on Saturday 26th September.

Marty McCormack is Junior Rally Champion

Posted: July 24, 2009 5:30 PM

One young driver has dominated the MSA British Junior Rally Championship in 2009, twenty three year-old Northern Irishman Marty McCormack taking a hat-trick of asphalt victories to seal the title with one event in hand.

Young drivers are a feature across the board in this year’s BRC, but only the front wheel drive pilots are eligible for this, one of only three MSA British Rally titles. That said, the competition was fierce early on, three different winners in three different makes of car coming from the first half of the season.

Having been fourth Junior first time out, McCormack’s previous experience in his Citroën C2R2 showed as the season progressed, taking second on the Pirelli. But it was on tarmac that the car and driver combination shone, He took ninth place overall on the Jim Clark Rally, sixth on the Isle of Man and an amazing fourth place on his home Ulster Rally, missing the overall podium by just twelve seconds.

In addition, his stunning Ulster result was sufficient to seal him a place in the Pirelli Star Driver final at the end of the season, where he will vie for a fully funded drive in the 2010 British Rally Championship.

With such great pace, he and co-driver Phil Clarke can now afford to go to the final round of the UK’s Citroën Racing Trophy, Rallye le Touquet, needing just to finish the event to take the Citroën title too.

The amiable lad from Draperstown can even afford to switch back to his trusty Escort on the final round of the British Rally Championship, Rally Yorkshire, having auctioned the co-driver’s place for charity.

Martin will collect the prestigious MSA British Junior Rally Championship award alongside the best of British in Motorsport at the glittering prize ceremony at the Royal Automobile Club’s Pall Mall headquarters in January

Pirelli confirmed as British Rally Championship Official Tyre Supplier for a further three years

Posted: July 24, 2009 5:30 PM

An agreement has been reached for Pirelli to continue as the Official Control Tyre Supplier to the MSA British Rally Championship for a further three years. Pirelli’s contribution to the Championship will ensure continued stability and the deal allows the Star Driver scheme to continue within Britain’s premier rally championship.

Dominic Sandivasci, Managing Director of Pirelli Tyres Ltd said, “I'm delighted that we have been able to continue our long term relationship with the British Rally Championship. This is good news for Teams and Competitors alike, as it provides stability and a foundation which will allow the Championship to continue to flourish. Pirelli is committed to developing young talent with a view to driving the sport forward and our new agreement allows us to continue to do this within the BRC.”

The MSA British Rally Championship will move into its 52nd year in 2010 and it is expected to continue to attract new, exciting and talented drivers as well as providing a showcase for established drivers and teams.

The Championship has moved towards a level playing field approach, controlling tyres and fuel as well as restricting cars to production-based machinery. This format has allowed true talent to shine and has been instrumental in attracting drivers from the British Isles, Australia, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and Zimbabwe.

To reward the challenges faced in the British Rally Championship, the Pirelli Star Driver scheme has already given two talented drivers the chance to contest a whole season in the BRC, with this year’s eventual winner benefitting from the same chance in 2010.

The 2008 Star Driver shootout finalists have also been eligible for a share of £10,500 prize money across the season, £6000 already split between Jason Pritchard, Luke Pinder and Andreas Sjolander.

Championship ManagerMark Taylor said; “Pirelli has been synonymous with the British Rally Championship for several years now and I welcome their continued involvement and support. It will be fantastic to continue working with a company which not only provides excellent products and service, but has a shared vision for the future of rallying here in the UK.”

BRC to continue on Sky Sports

Posted: March 18, 2009 9:36 AM

The MSA British Rally Championship will continue to benefit from Sky Sports TV coverage in 2009, the excellent programmes once again supplied by the Isle of Man’s Greenlight Television.

Not only will the main BRC events’ one hour programmes be available to around 500 million homes worldwide, but the additional half hour Rallyzone programme will cover the BRC classes, Fiesta Sporting Trophy, Swift Sport Cup and BRC Challenge.

Greenlight’s own weekly Motorsport Mundial magazine style programme will feature the Citroën C2R2 Cup and airs not only on satellite across the world, but also on the UK’s terrestrial Channel Five.

The Sky Sports programmes covering the main events will continue to be broadcast on the Monday immediately after the rally. The season preview programme will be shown on Monday 23rd March, while Rallyzone will be shown in the week before events two to six, not only covering the previous events’ classes, but previewing the forthcoming rally too.

All the TV schedules are posted on the BRC website, updates for later events available about a month in advance. Five’s TV schedules are listed.

The BRC’s popular audio interviews will continue in 2009 too. These are posted rallybrc.co.uk’s NEWS CENTRE Radio section on each of the events. The top three finishers and each class winner are featured at the end of each leg, as well as breaking news stories and interviews with teams and personalities.

The preview programme will be broadcast on Sky Sports 2 at 6pm on Monday 23rd March before the new opening round, Bulldog International Rally North Wales, which takes place on Saturday 28th.

2009 BRC youth assault

Posted: March 10, 2009 3:52 PM

The entry so far in this year’s MSA British Rally Championship boasts the hottest young talent from the British Isles and overseas, with nearly three quarters of the registered competitors aged 26 or younger.

Whilst the remainder of drivers are hardly elderly, the youth assault will certainly spice up the battles throughout the series and undermines that the BRC is the place to be if you have any aspirations to progress to the top of the sport.

The quality of entry is equally excellent, with eleven of the sixteen MSA British Rally Elite and Academy members contesting the BRC, amongst them Champions and award winners. 2008 C2R2 Cup champion Jason Pritchard is joined by last year’s BRC Privateers Champion Jonathan Greer, the 2008 Mitsubishi Evo Challenge winner David Bogie taking the wheel of his prize car in 2009.

Along with Pritchard, several more Pirelli Star Driver nominees join the 2008 winner Adam Gould, who was also a finalist in the European shoot-out with Irishman Keith Cronin. Andreas Sjolander not only brings his shoot-out experience, but he has a Swedish Junior Rally Championship under his belt too. Luke Pinder added his name to the 2008 Pirelli roll-call as well as bringing the 2007 BRC Challenge title to the party.

Cronin also brings the Billy Coleman award winners to three, 2007 recipient Owen Murphy joined by Ross Forde who took the Young Driver award. The Irish are certainly well represented this year, with Elite and Academy members Alastair Fisher and Marty McCormack taking Irish Fiesta Sporting Trophy and Citroën C2R2 Cups respectively.

Scots Dave Weston junior and Euan Thorburn are eager to show their pace too, their potential recognised by their inclusion in the British Rally Academy. Both bring excellent individual results to the BRC, but have yet to add titles to their cache.

Out this year in the Swift Sport Cup are Australian Super 1600 Champion Molly Taylor and 2008 BRC Challenge winner David Harrison, the Manxman joined by countryman and Isle of Man Youth Scholarship winner Martin Jones.

With the youth element making such an impact on the number of entries (the average age of the drivers listed below is under 22), the 2009 season could be viewed as the dawning of a new era.

Adam Gould (21) Subaru Impreza N14 (R4)

2009 Swift Sport Cup is GO!

Posted: March 5, 2009 11:03 AM

After further successful meetings with Suzuki GB, the MSA British Rally Championship can now reveal its support structure for the 2009 Swift Sport Cup.

The 2009 Champion will take a prize drive on the final round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, the Rally of Scotland, at the end of November.

In addition there will be on event prize money offering cash awards for the top seven cars on each event with the top placed driver taking £500, £300 for second, £200 for third and £100 for the remainder of finishers down to seventh place.

The support package will include on-event support from Monster Sport Europe, which will attend each of the events with a parts truck and technical assistance for Swift Sport competitors.

Seven drivers have already registered for the MSA British Rally Championship’s Swift Sport Cup one-make series so far:

    Nicolas Everard
    David Harrison
    Gordon Nichol
    Luke Pinder
    Nick Rowland
    Richard Sykes
    Molly Taylor
The series will also enjoy TV coverage on Sky Sports’ BRC Rallyzone programme and have its own dedicated website. The highest place Junior driver will receive an automatic nomination to the Pirelli Star Driver shootout, with all registered drivers eligible for nomination at any time during the six events.

      Championship Manager Mark Taylor said
“It’s been a challenging time since Suzuki Motor Corporation announced the world wide suspension of its motorsport activities. Between us, we have created a rescue package which keeps the championship alive and healthy. If you speak to anyone who has driven on of these diminutive cars then you will hear that they are great fun to drive and competitive too. The BRC is also committed to a Swift Sport Cup for 2010 and we are already in discussions to ensure that the series continues to grow in popularity.”

Ian Robinson, formerly of Suzuki GB, will continue to be involved and provide co-ordination between competitors and the Championship on each of the six events that make up the 2009 Series.

Augmenting the presence of the Swift Sport Cup rally village, each registered competitor will be issued with a Swift Sport Cup awning and groundsheet for their use throughout the season.

Competitors interested in competing in the Championship should be aware that there is a range of eligible Cup cars still available, ranging from brand new ones, to one year old models run by MSE in the 2009 series. These can be viewed by appointment at Monster Sport Europe inMilton Keynes.

BRC registrations roll in

Posted: March 2, 2009 3:12 PM

Entries are rolling in for both the MSA British Rally Championship and its support series, the BRC Challenge, with nearly forty registered drivers between the two series’.

After unprecedented levels of entries in 2008, the BRC had expected a fall in number for 2009 in difficult economic conditions. But the trend is so far very good, particularly with the addition of the Fiesta Sporting Trophy, which could reach twenty registrations in advance of the BRC’s first round in late March.

“The interest for the 2009 British Rally Championship has been really high over the closed season and I have a list with 74 names of people who have indicated an interested in entering this year. I would certainly hope to get somewhere close to last year’s field of 40 cars on the first round. The British Rally Championship is certainly cheaper than it has ever been and without the might of the works teams, the opportunities are wide open.” said Championship ManagerMark Taylor.

Even the Swift Sport Cup, which has had Suzuki’s support withdrawn, already has five registered crews, including two new faces making the move from the BRC Challenge. Interest from several more drivers goes to prove that the 1600cc production based championship is alive and well.

But it is not just two wheel drive machinery that is boosting numbers, the BRC already has commitments from several Rally 4 category cars and drivers. Adam Gould’s Pirelli TEG Sport Impreza is nearly ready for a test session and David Bogie’s Mitsubishi Evo X is scheduled to debut on the first round, Rally North Wales.

Entries from Ireland are bolstering the four wheel drive category too, with Owen Murphy, Keith Cronin and Daniel Barry on the list of Mitsubishi drivers, while BRC regular Rob Swann and Dave Weston Junior are amongst the Subaru runners.

With a great mix of youth and experience, the 2009 Championship should be more competitive than ever before and the new opening round, Bulldog International Rally North Wales still has three weeks to go before entries close.

The early lower registration fee for the MSA British Rally Championship is held until tomorrow (Saturday) but any forms with a Saturday or Sunday postmark will be accepted at the lower price.

FX MOTOR SPORTS CONTEMPLATE THEIR FUTURE IN THE BRC

Posted: February 23, 2009 3:25 PM

FX Motor Sports’ Hugh Evans and David Higgins say they have grown so frustrated with the current situation in the British Rally Championship that they are contemplating alternative championships for this year.
The comments come after the postponement of a court hearing last week which would have clarified the results of Trackrod Rally Yorkshire. The outcome of the hearing was hoped to finally confirm the results of the 2008 British Rally Championship too.
FX Motor Sports boss Hugh Evans said, “I do not see how we can continue with the BRC when issues like this are allowed to persist for so long. It gives potential sponsors a bad image of our sport and makes a mockery of all the money we have invested in the team over the last year. We are extremely disappointed that the hearing was postponed.
“David led the championship for most of the season, and we did well in the teams championship too, but we cannot tell anyone where we definitely finished in either championship. Even if the results are declared final now, it's too late for us or any other driver or team to use where we finished as a tool to raise sponsorship - it's just too late."

Former British rally champion and long term BRC competitor David Higgins, is also the Sporting Director of FX Motor Sports. He too has become frustrated by the situation.
"The longer this goes on for the more we are inclined to look at different options for this year and leave the BRC behind,” said Higgins. “We feel extremely let down by everything that has happened, and feel the 2008 championship has become a farce with everything that has gone on.
I have already looked into options for contesting the British historic championship in one of Mark Soloway’s Escorts. Hugh and I must think seriously about the best way forward for FX Motor Sports this year.”

With the 2008 results still provisional, the 2009 British championship starts on the Bulldog International Rally of North Wales on March 28.

BRC welcomes Fiesta SportTrophy

Posted: February 23, 2009 3:24 PM

The 2009 MSA British Rally Championship welcomes another one-make rally series to the fold, as promoter M-Sport - the team behind the BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team has officially announced the new look Kick Energy Fiesta SportTrophy.
Now in its fourth successful year, five of the seven-round series events will follow the BRC, but the season opens in early March with the gravel Malcolm Wilson Rally, which is closely followed by the first BRC round - The Bulldog International Rally Wales.

The BRC’s second round, the Pirelli International Rally is next in April, followed by the RSAC Scottish Rally in June before a return to the BRC and a change to asphalt, with two iconic events, International Rally Isle of Man in July and the Toddsleap.com Ulster International Rally in August. The series comes to a close on gravel with International Rally Yorkshire in September. The addition of the FST will make the British Rally Championship the place to be in one-make series’, with a championship represented in each of the two wheel drive classes. The Fiestas will run in Rally 3, while existing Citroën and Suzuki series’ will run in Rally 2 and Rally 1 respectively. British Rally Championship Manager, Mark Taylor, said, “It’s fantastic that the Kick Energy Fiesta SportTrophy now runs alongside the British Rally Championship, affording it the profile it richly deserves and giving an opportunity for its competitors to compete on some of the best rallies in the British Isles”

BRC TO RUN SWIFT SPORT CUP

Posted: February 15, 2009 9:26 AM

Following a positive meeting with Suzuki GB, the MSA British Rally Championship has been given formal permission to run the Swift Sport Cup. Discussions took place regarding continued support for competitors and options are now being considered ahead of a final meeting with SGB scheduled for next Friday (20th Feb)   BRC Manager Mark Taylor said, "Acknowledging that Suzuki GB; along with the industry generally, is faced with economic pressures, the meeting was very supportive of a continued Swift Sport Cup, which could deliver close and exciting competition in controlled one make cars, with on-event technical support, media and TV, incentives and prizes. All parties agreed to work together in creating a viable package and will reconvene next Friday to finalise the details. The Swift Sport Cup is on for 2009, and I am confident that the final package will be a worthwhile proposition for existing and new competitors."

It is expected that final details will be released at the end of next week. The final package will be available for a maximum of 12 competitors and there are still Swift Sport Cup rally cars available for the 2009 Championship. Interested parties should contact, email swiftsportcup@rallybrc.co.uk

Mitsubishi restructures its UK motorsport campaigns
Works rally team withdrawn from competition in 2009.

Posted: January 27, 2009 1:56 PM

Mitsubishi Motors UK has today announced the restructure of its British-based motorsport campaigns.

The company has confirmed that its two-car works rally team will not compete in 2009. The decision has been taken due to the current economic climate and the subsequent pressures affecting the automotive industry as a whole.

The company's withdrawal from top-level competition in the UK comes after four years of success in the British Rally Championship and previously a season in the National series.

During the past five years, the team has regularly been at the front of the field. It claimed the National Production title in 2004 and the British Team's title in 2005, before going on to win both the British Team's and Driver's titles in 2007 and 2008**.
(**Subject to the outcome of an MSA hearing in February.)

"As the most successful manufacturer-backed rally team in Britain in recent years it is disappointing to withdraw from competition this season", said Ralliart General Manager Paul Brigden. "The deciding factor is purely due to the global economic downturn and nothing to do with the smaller issues that we have had to deal with recently."

Mr. Brigden continues: "Since our UK rally programmes began, it has been the company's wish to participate in British motorsport. Therefore, if market conditions become more favourable, then we will explore every avenue in order to resurrect the works team and continue from where we left off. We would even consider a return in 2010 if circumstances permit."

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved with Mitsubishi's UK works rally programme: our crews, technicians, management team, sponsors and suppliers", concluded Mr. Brigden.

MMUK is pleased to report that its successful one-make rally-series, the Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Challenge, will continue as planned for its ninth consecutive season this year.

BRC ANNOUNCES PIRELLI CUP FOR 2009

Posted: October 10, 2008 7:41 PM

In advance of the Star Driver Shootout, the MSA British Rally Championship announced an additional incentive for the finalists. The Pirelli Cup, as it will be known, will reward all the runners up of the Pirelli BRC Star Driver Shootout with an incentivised support package in the 2009 MSA British Rally Championship.

All of the runners-up from the 2008 Pirelli BRC Star Driver competition who take part in next years British Rally Championship will get an exclusive entry to the Pirelli Cup. The scheme will pay out the £10,000 prize fund to the runners up, paying out cash awards on each of the Championship’s six rallies. The prize fund will be split between the top three runners in the Cup, with £1000 for first place, £500 for second and £250 for third place.

Mark Taylor, Championship Manager said, “We wanted to recognise and reward runners up in the Pirelli BRC Star Driver shootout by giving them some additional support in helping continue their career development in the 2009 British Rally Championship.”

2009 MSA British Rally Championship calendar announced

Posted: September 29, 2008 4:19 PM

The MSA British Rally Championship calendar will have a new opening round for 2009, but will still retain six representative rallies, one from each of the countries in the British Isles: England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man.

International Rally North Wales will precede the previous season opener, the Pirelli International, by just three weeks, starting 2009's BRC at the end of March on some of Europe's best forest stages. Changes are also afoot with Rally Isle of Man moving a week earlier in the calendar and reducing their current three day format down to just two.

While the core of the BRC will remain the same, other less significant changes include new stages and a new home in Carlisle for the Pirelli, a Kelso base for the entire Jim Clark Rally and a return to the Friday night and Saturday format. The Ulster organisers are considering some new stages and host venue too, but negotiations are ongoing and the location is not yet confirmed.

The penultimate round in previous years, Rally Yorkshire, will form the backdrop for an exciting end of season battle for the MSA British Rally Championship title. At present this is the only event to remain wholly unchanged, but the organisers are keen to ensure that the rally remains fresh and vibrant.

After three successful years as part of both WRC and BRC, Wales Rally GB will host an end of season 'Best of British' celebration. By linking with the BRC, the event organisers are offering incentives and prizes to the newly crowned British overall, junior and class champions and all other registered competitors who have an aspiration to contest the UK's round of the World Rally Championship.

'Mindful of the feedback we have received from competitors and aware of the current and future economic climates, I believe we have provided a mouth watering and exciting Championship calendar which incorporates the best events in the UK. We are seeking to add a seventh rally to the calendar, a gravel event in another region of the UK, but mindful that budgets may be tight in 2009, coupled with difficulties in the cramped calendar, we have postponed this move until 2010.' said Championship Manager, Mark Taylor.

'The changes mentioned provide vibrant, more cost effective and exciting rallies that strive to be the highest calibre. Add this to a celebration of the British Champions in front of the rest of the World at Wales Rally GB, next year's BRC promises to be an epic.'
