The Maiden City Motor Club have to-day announced that Saturday’s PAT KIRK LTd. Lark in the Park has a record entry level, with entrants local and as far away as Killarney, in the top class rally, to be run at the Derry City Council, Waterside venue of St. Columb’s Park.

The top entry includes 3 previous winners, 06 winner, Richard Hogg and one of Ireland’s leading driver Denis Biggerstaff, closely followed by the up and coming Sean Devine. But it’s just not these drivers that could take honours. The list includes many top WRC cars with their drivers, promising to thrill the spectators on Saturday.  

A driver of note, is at number 10, one the North’s leading businessmen, but also a veteran rally driver of 30 years experience, Strabane driver Pat Kirk. Of course, the PAT KIRK Ltd. are sponsoring this year’s event, and Pat remarked that it was his way of putting something back into the North-West community by way of sponsoring this event.

Clerk of the Course for the event, Declan McCay, said he hoped that many spectators would come out to see the cars, and stars, and avail of the many facilities provided for families, and see many of the displays on show during the day, as well as the rally itself, “because everyone deserves a day out in the Park”, especially at this time of the year.


Derry City Council support for Derry’s own Park Rally
Derry City Council, custodians of Watersides own St. Columb’s Park in Derry, today assisted in the launch for the 10th Anniversary Lark in the Park. The Mayor of the City Alderman Drew Thompson, heard Clerk of the Course Declan McCay give details to local press about the event, planned for Saturday 14th July. With an entry level of over 50 cars, the organising Maiden City Motor Club Ltd., give details of its plans for the people of Derry City Council area, and further afield, to come out to enjoy the day out in the beautiful surroundings of the facility in the Waterside are of the Maiden City. Mr. McCay welcomed the sponsors of the event, Pat Kirk Ltd., represented by Mr. James McDermott Dealer Principal from the Mazda branch in Strabane, and said how delighted he was that the Pat Kirk Group decided to support the Lark in the Park event, in its 10th year of rallying in St. Columb’s Park. It was noted that the Pat Kirk Group were involved for the 2006 event at an associate level, but now had given a full commitment for 2007. For a progressive company such as the Pat Kirk Group, with it commitment to the motoring public in the North-West for many years, this was a way of giving into the local community. Plans for the event based round a 5 stage rally, include a day out in the Park  for families, with entertainment and something for everyone, from the face painters, balloon shows, air slides, obstacle course, bouncy castle, and static displays of old cars and new alike. Spectators will be able to get up close to see the Rally cars when they are stopped, and there will be plenty of owners to answer all the usual questions the pubic have to ask at such an event. The Pat Kirk Group will have many of their current range of Mazda models on display  

  SPECIAL STAGES
The format for the day will be 5 special stages in the confines of St. Columb’s Park, rally action  starting at 10.30am. It is expected that 50 cars will compete for the various classes.  

SPECTATOR VIEWING
During the day, spectators will be catered for in the special spectator areas, controlled by the sector marshals, who will allow the safe passage and movement of spectators between stages, allowing safe viewing of the action throughout the day. The layout of St. Columb’s Park allows some superb viewing from safe vantage points, in addition to the easy viewing in the restricted service area, where the spectators can view the rally cars up-close and obtain autographs from some of the best known rally drivers in the country.  

  PARKING & ENTRANCE
Spectators to the Limavady Road site are asked to use the special car parking facilities have been arranged for spectator parking. This car park will be signposted on the Limavady Road  at the Wilton Park football grounds. Entrance to the Park will be by pedestrian gate only, with an entry fee of £5 per adult, with special concession for Families and children free.

Making a welcome return will be the entertainment loved by young and old alike, - the bouncy castle, face painters, entertainers will be in attendance on the day, allowing the adults time to enjoy the fast rally action.

It is a very rare occasion that a motor rally can take place in a city, and in such close proximity to the public, especially with a WRC Champion in attendance”.

Lark in the Park – All systems go for 2007
Organisers of the 2007 Lark in the Park, Northern Irelands leading motor club, Maiden City Motor Club, have just announced plans for the format of the 2007 event.

Saturday 14th of July will be the day the sound of rally cars once again take to the course in the ancient and picturesque St. Columb’s Park in the Waterside area of Derry.  

Entries are already flooding in for a restricted 50 places, and officials have indicated that it looks like that the restricted entry will give way to a reserve list for the first time in the 10 year history of this famous event. Indeed this is the 10th anniversary since Derry City OCuncil and Maiden City Motor Club collaborated in bringing ‘MotorSport to the people’, a policy adopted in more recent times by MSA, the governing body of MotorSPort in the UK and Irelands governing body, Motorsport Ireland.
