Johnston reigns in the rain
Longfords Sam Johnston took the overall honours in round two of the Motorsport Ireland Hewison National Autotest championship which took place last Sunday in Vernon Mount on the outskirts of Cork City.

The Cork Motor Club run event took place in terrible conditions as it rained from start to finish. To be fair, the weather forecast did say there would be showers, but they didn’t say they’d all be joined together.

Johnston was out of the blocks early in his mini special and completed test one on 66.0,Eddie Peterson, also in a Mini special, was second on 67.9 and Paddy Power and J.J.Farrell were joint third in Mini specials again.

Test two was taken by Christopher Evans (Westfield) on 69.8 with Ken Irwin (mini special) second on 71.2 and Peterson in third place on 71.9.

This situation was rectified by Johnston who again won test three on 56.0 with Eamonn Byrne 2nd on 57.1 and J.J. Farrell a close third on 57.2.

The remainder of the tests were all tight affairs with tenths of a second separating the above group of drivers, with test four going to Christopher Evans on 62.1. Test 5 went to J.J.Farrell on 64.3. Sam Johnston and J.J.Farrell were joint winners of test 6 on 54.0.Test 7 went to Johnston again on 61.1. Test 8 was again J.J.Farrell on 63.1.Test 9 was taken by Eddie Peterson on 53.4. Ten went to Johnston again, on 61.3.Test 11 was again J.J. Farrell on 60.6 and the final test, test 12, was won by Eddie Peterson on 53.2.

Autotesting returns to Cork on Sunday the 4th of September when Cork Motor Club run round 2 of the Hewison National Autotest Championship at Vernon Mount,just outside the City.

Eamonn Byrne,a winner of this event on a number of occasions in the past will compete again this year as should the rest of the Autotest regulars such as Paul Phelan,Paddy Power,Alan Clarke,Victor Beamish,Stephen Clarke,Don Giles, Liam Cashman and Michael Cashman to name a few.

Check-in for the event will be at 12.00 noon with a 1.00 pm start.The event is also a counting round of the Premier Auto Parts Munster Autotest Championship and the Cork Motor Club Championship.

C.O.C. Brian O Connell will run 4 tests three times and the club look forward to running another successful event that will satisfy competitors and spectators alike.
