The first round of the Northern Ireland Rally Championship was kicked off yesterday morning with last years winner and current champion Denis Biggerstaff. He suffered with some engine problems on that first stage and dropped 20 seconds to the others. Owen Lamont was also disappointed as although he was 2nd quickest over the first stage, he felt that he should have capitalised more on those who either hadn't woke up yet or suffered problems.

Trevor Moore was the man to set the early pace but as the weather got better, the World Rally cars came into their own. Owen Lamont then took the lead by Stage 3 with Trevor 2nd and Derek McGarrity was on the move climbing up to third after receiving a time penalty for late arrival at a time control. Another man on the move was Stephen Whitford with championship sponsor Mark Crowe in the DGM Toyota Celica. He was taking time from Trevor Moore and almost caught the Escort Cosworth before the end. Trevor Moore put some good times in on the last 2 stages to hold the Celica back. Owen Lamont was now under pressure as Derek McGarrity had climbed right up behind the GEM Impreza WRC, even with the time penalty. But the action was all on the last stage when Derek McGarrity and James McKee put in a scorching times 7 seconds quicker than Owen Lamont and Phil McRae to take the win.
